Doug and I got a nice 3-4 hours last weekend to go out and enjoy each others company. So we went out to lunch (where I had my best pinball game I have had in years and we won an unheard of 2 free games!) and then went to see what was on exhibit at the KMA. It's a nice museum- The perfect size to fully absorb each exhibit.

We had time to read about each work and talk about what we thought...it was nice. They were showing Hollywood portraits from the 20s and 30s...The time period when photography and photographers changed Hollywood... when photos of actors changed the way people looked at Hollywood and therefore how people made and marketed movies...the way people showcased stars instead of films. It was good. The museum also had a show of wood furniture and wooden art made by artists from TN, very impressive. There were really cool benches, tables, music stands, and other objects that would look lovely in my home. It also made me think about the exhibit I saw in Santiago. There the show was more about the fluid movement of wood... and the show there had more art pieces and less functional art.

The other exhibit at the KMA was a new and permanent installation. It was artwork from the East Tennessee from around the turn of the century all the way up to modern art pieces. There were mostly paintings but also some sculptures. I had not realized how many well known artists started or live in Knoxville (for example, Richard Jolley). I knew that there were a lot of folk artists from the southeast but there were modern artists that I really liked too. It was a nice afternoon.
